People all over the world commemorate the day of Pentecost on this very weekend. As a Pentecostal church we not only celebrate what has happened, but we seek God for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our lives, that what He did through the early disciples He would do through us. The book of Acts records the account of all that God did in the first century, and we read it not as historians but as missionaries who depend on the Spirit’s power in order for the mission and message of Jesus to go forth. When the power of God comes upon our lives we find very quickly that what we have received is enough to share, and His love, power and truth become uncontainable in our lives.

We are continuing our conversation on the methods of evangelism. Today we're talking about power. We know that Jesus commissioned His disciples in John 20:21, sending them as He was sent. We must answer the question: "How was Jesus sent?" Jesus was commissioned by the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit.

As we have walked through the story of Jonah we have seen the power of sin and the pain of consequences. We can all relate to aspects of what we have seen in Jonah’s life. Here is the best part of all of this—God is not finished with Jonah, and He is not finished with us. It’s not too late! As the story of Jonah continues to unfold we see the mercy of our God in the midst of it all. This is the hope that we have—not that we are perfect or that we have done everything right but that God can give us another chance to turn things around. Aren’t you grateful for the mercy of God in your life? As we finish up chapter 1 of Jonah be reminded today that God is always ready to pour out His mercy upon you and everyone around you as you turn your heart to Him.

So far, we've talked about the motive and the message of evangelism. Today we're talking about the method: the WHO, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, and HOW of leading people to Christ. Grab a notepad and write down these practicalities. You'll be glad you did!

Last week we began a new series based on the book of Jonah. In the first few verses we read how Jonah received a clear word from the Lord to go to Nineveh and preach against the evil that was prevalent throughout. Jonah didn’t like this word at all which is why he decided to run. Not only did he run, but he started a journey to Tarshish so he could get as far away from God as he possibly could. The only problem was, we can’t run away from God. God is everywhere, and He knows everything. This was pure foolishness on Jonah’s part, but the story doesn’t end there.

The New American Standard Bible, the word "gospel" is mentioned about 100 times in the New Testament. It also means "good news". We're talking about the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Good News of salvation that is found through Him. We want to make sure that people understand the gospel, for it is the very centrality of what we believe.

Today we are beginning a sermon series based on the book of Jonah which I am calling “Running From the Heart of God.” The story of Jonah is familiar to so many people. Children love to hear of the prophet on the run who rides the ocean in the belly of a whale. Skeptics and scholars debate over the possibility of such a story being true, with many concluding that it’s a myth like the myriad of other legendary fables we tell. However, Jesus didn’t think that Jonah was a mythical person. In fact, Jesus used the account of Jonah as a comparison when He predicted the three-day unfolding of His death, burial, and resurrection.

Today, we are going to read some of Moses’ final words to the Israelites as he prepared to see Joshua and his followers off to conquer the Promised Land. Moses reminded them about the importance of the generations to teach what the Lord had done. God delivered them from slavery and protected them from Pharaoh’s great army. He provided them with food, water, and resources for 40 years in the wilderness, and finally He was taking them to a land flowing with milk and honey! We must pass the truth of God’s deliverance and provision on to the next generation so that they can carry on the truth to a broken and hurting world.
